Who Is Satoshi? Ripple's Schwartz Pushes Back on Craig Wright's Take - U.Today
The discussion about the real identity of Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto resurfaces on X with Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz pushing back firmly against arguments from Craig Wright about what it really means to be “Satoshi.”
“CSW is wasting a lot of time pretending not to understand that when people ask the question who is Satoshi, what they mean by Satoshi is whoever (or whatever) did the things attributed to Satoshi,” Schwartz tweeted.
Schwartz highlights the point that what people imply when they ask “Who is Satoshi?” is whoever (or whatever) did the things attributed to Satoshi. He added that Wright “has yet to” or “pretends not to” understand this fact. “By Satoshi what people mean is whoever, or whatever group, did the things commonly attributed to Satoshi. Nothing more, nothing less,” Schwartz stated.
Schwartz faults Wright’s arguments for not being straightforward. “You spend a lot of time criticizing a position for its supposed unprovable assumptions but your entire argument is based on the unprovable assumption of yours that Satoshi is an individual,” Schwartz responded to Wright, who has publicly claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto. The claims were rejected by the crypto community and deemed false by a UK High Court judge.
“By Satoshi we mean whoever or whatever group did the things attributed to Satoshi. Writing the whitepaper is one of those things. Having generated certain keys is another,” Schwartz said.
Satoshi mystery continues but community remains unshaken
The real identity of the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, remains a mystery. A recent April report in The New York Times claimed Blockstream CEO Adam Back was the most likely candidate. Back, an early figure in the Bitcoin community, denies he is the BTC creator.
Back is considered one of the more plausible candidates along with computer scientists Hal Finney and Nick Szabo. The 2024 HBO documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” identified developer Peter Todd as the Bitcoin creator.
The cryptocurrency community remains unshaken as it has always maintained that the mystery isn’t a financially material one and that, even if proven, the founder’s identity would have little impact on Bitcoin fundamentals. Bitcoin, they say, has been independently operated for more than 10 years and it’s perhaps better for investors that it remain that way
