India's Government Testing AI for Accurate Weather Forecasts

India’s Role in Global Farming Demands Advanced Forecast Accuracy

India is a country with a mixed climate where problems like torrential rains, floods, and drought keep coming up in different seasons. Nearly 3,000 people have lost their lives this year due to bad weather.

To deal with this problem, India is starting a venture to use artificial intelligence (AI) to create advanced climate models to improve weather predictions.

IMD Harnessing AI for Enhanced Weather Forecasts in India

In fact, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) hopes that AI-based climate models and advisories, leveraging the latest AI Advancements, will help improve forecasts, especially for severe weather conditions like floods and droughts. At present, IMD does forecasting using mathematical models and supercomputers. However, with the integration of AI advancement, higher-quality and lower-cost weather data can be generated.

However, the IMD is already using AI to help create public alerts for conditions such as heat waves and disease outbreaks such as malaria. Along with this, IMD is planning to increase the number of weather observatories up to village level with the aim of high-resolution forecasting data.
