Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Bahram Ghasemi on the 20th responded to the controversy caused by Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif’s post regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying that the Iranian Foreign Ministry would never take any action without coordination with higher authorities.
Ghasemi said, “Ultimately, all decisions, especially those involving such major issues, must be made in coordination with the relevant national authorities.”
Ghasemi said, “Zarif’s post is part of an existing consensus. The post is not meant to establish a new consensus but merely to implement an existing one. Previously, due to the breakdown of the ceasefire in Lebanon and the United States’ failure to fulfill its promises, this consensus had not been fully implemented. Therefore, the post is only intended to confirm that Iran will keep its commitments and fulfill its obligations regarding the Strait of Hormuz. The content of the post is also very clear.”
On the early morning of the 8th, Zarif issued a statement on behalf of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, announcing that ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz could do so safely within two weeks after coordination with Iranian armed forces. But the next day, Iran accused the United States of violating the ceasefire agreement, and the Strait of Hormuz was closed.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 16th that Lebanon and Israel agreed to a ceasefire on the 10th.
On the 17th, Zarif said on social media that, given the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, during the ceasefire, Iran would open the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial ships, with navigation routes coordinated according to the previously announced routes by Iranian ports and maritime organizations.
This post sparked controversy both inside and outside Iran. (Xinhua News Agency)
