Thailand summons Iranian ambassador over attack on Thai-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz
Odaily Planet Daily News: The Thai government summoned the Iranian ambassador over the attack on a Thai-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz and is making every effort to rescue the three crew members still trapped onboard. The involved bulk carrier Mayuree Naree was hit by Iranian shells while passing through the strait empty-handed on Wednesday. Of the 23 crew members onboard, 20 abandoned ship in lifeboats and were rescued by the Omani navy. The shipowner believes the three missing crew members are likely trapped inside the engine room at the stern, which was hit and caught fire. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that diplomats in Muscat are cooperating with Oman on the rescue and have summoned the Iranian ambassador for talks. The Thai Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the Middle East situation, noting that the incident was triggered by US and Israeli attacks and Iran’s retaliation, which could escalate regional tensions and pose a serious threat to innocent civilians. They urged all parties to respect international law, exercise restraint, and de-escalate the situation. (Jin10)
