Recently, a vendor at Fangquanmen Farmers Market in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, has gained attention for his exquisite artwork on foam boards. The images show the vendor painting multiple shrimp on a foam box in front of his stall. Netizens praised the artist, saying he’s very talented, but some questioned whether the shrimp were stickers pasted onto the board.

On March 11, a reporter contacted the Xuningmen Street community where the market is located. Staff said the stall is on the outskirts of the market:

“Yes, there is this stall. The foam board with the shrimp painting has been placed at the stall. When it gets dirty or old over time, we replace it. We’ve checked there — it’s painted, not stickers.” said a staff member.

“I sell shrimp. I just like to draw advertisements on foam boxes in my free time. It takes about 20 or 30 minutes to finish.”

On the same day, the reporter contacted the vendor, Mr. Liang. He said he is in his sixties and that the shrimp on the foam board are painted by himself. He has no formal art training, but painting is a hobby. He previously worked in glass painting and often mimics famous artists’ works, so he has some foundation.

In his view, painting on foam boxes is easier than on paper: “I’ve also painted crabs before.”
