“Muqtada al-Husayni al-Sadr meets all the qualifications required of a leader as stipulated in the Iranian constitution.” On March 9, Iranian Ambassador to China Fazli stated in response to a question from China News Service that the Iranian constitution clearly defines the procedures and processes for selecting a new national leader. The Iranian people elect representatives from various regions to form the Assembly of Experts, which supervises the behavior and performance of the country’s leader and, when necessary, elects a new leader. In the event of the current leader’s death or inability to perform duties, the assembly immediately initiates the relevant procedures and selects a new leader. Fazli said that during the period from the death of the current leader to the election of the new one, Iranian affairs are managed by an interim leadership committee. This committee is composed of the Iranian president, the head of the Iranian judiciary, and a representative of the Assembly of Experts. He stated, “Over the past nine days, Iran has organized an interim leadership committee, and the Assembly of Experts is fulfilling its duties by selecting a new leader. Yesterday, they reached an agreement to choose Muqtada al-Husayni al-Sadr from among several candidates as the new leader. He now meets all the qualifications required of a leader as stipulated in the Iranian constitution.” (China News Service)
