Japan Mehta Appointed as Humana's Chief Information Officer
Humana has brought in Japan Mehta to lead its technology transformation efforts in a newly elevated CIO position, marking a significant shift in the company’s digital leadership structure. Mehta, who most recently held the position of Chief Data Officer at Citi, transitioned into his new role at Humana during early 2025, taking over from Sam Deshpande who announced his departure at the close of 2024.
Steering Humana’s Technology Transformation
In his capacity as Chief Information Officer, Mehta is charged with directing Humana’s digital infrastructure and technology operations, a portfolio that encompasses the organization’s data systems and broader technology ecosystem. Beyond day-to-day oversight, he is tasked with architecting the company’s technology transformation strategy, positioning Humana to compete more effectively in an increasingly digital healthcare landscape. The role represents a critical opportunity for Humana to accelerate its modernization agenda and enhance its technology-driven decision-making capabilities.
Drawing on Data Expertise from Citi
Japan Mehta brings substantial credentials from his tenure at Citi, where he spearheaded comprehensive initiatives to enhance data quality and governance practices across the financial institution. His background in managing large-scale data infrastructure and driving governance reforms directly aligns with Humana’s objectives to strengthen its data capabilities and technology infrastructure. This combination of experience in financial services and healthcare technology positions Mehta as a strategic asset for navigating Humana’s digital evolution.
Supporting Leadership Continuity
To ensure continuity during the transition, Sam Deshpande—Mehta’s predecessor—agreed to maintain an advisory relationship with the company following his retirement. Deshpande’s temporary advisory role in IT strategy provided crucial support during Mehta’s initial months, facilitating knowledge transfer and organizational alignment. This thoughtful transition approach underscores Humana’s commitment to maintaining momentum in its technology initiatives while establishing strong new leadership direction.
The appointment of Japan Mehta signals Humana’s determination to elevate technology and data as core competitive differentiators within the increasingly digital-first healthcare industry.
