A federal judge in Chicago has fined Hytera Communications Corp. LTD, a Chinese telecommunications company, $50 million for conspiring to steal proprietary technology from Illinois-based Motorola Solutions, Inc. The company recruited Motorola employees to take trade secrets related to digital mobile radio technology, using the stolen information to develop competing products at a lower cost. Additionally, Hytera was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay approximately $214 million in restitution, offsetting previous civil judgment payments.
