(MENAFN) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the test launch of a sea-to-surface “strategic” cruise missile aboard a warship, state media confirmed Thursday.

The test was carried out on the destroyer Choe Hyon a day prior, according to a state-run news agency.

During the test, Kim declared that arming the North Korean Navy with nuclear weapons “is making satisfactory progress.”

The use of the term “strategic” is significant — Seoul-based media noted that Pyongyang’s deployment of the descriptor typically signals that the weapons in question may carry nuclear capabilities.

Kim also voiced “satisfaction” over the destroyer’s readiness ahead of its formal commissioning into active operations, while underscoring the critical role of a “powerful researchers group and shipbuilding industry” in advancing the country’s military ambitions.
