Sagrada Família is experiencing a historic milestone: The Tower of Jesus Christ is finally finished
Barcelona’s Sagrada Família has just reached a key milestone in its more than a century-long history. The Tower of Jesus Christ, the fourteenth completed tower in this ambitious project, now rises majestically to a height of 172.5 meters, solidifying the Sagrada Família as the tallest religious structure in the world. The final crucial element—the three-dimensional cross arm—was successfully installed last week, according to Ming Pao news agency, marking the end of a long phase of intensive work on the building’s exterior.
Decades of work culminate in recent days
Designed by the renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, the Sagrada Família was originally conceived with 18 towers representing the entire theological vision. When Gaudí died in 1926, only one tower had been completed—highlighting the enormity of this undertaking. The completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ, now brought to its final form, represents a groundbreaking step in the building’s restoration. Its completion means that this visionary structure is gradually transforming from an unfinished project into the reality Gaudí envisioned.
Interior work continues alongside the new phase
While the exterior outline of the basilica is taking shape, interior modifications are ongoing. Over the coming months, workers will finalize interior elements and prepare the building for the long-anticipated public unveiling. The preliminary opening of the Sagrada Família to visitors is planned for June 10, coinciding precisely with the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death. This timing is no coincidence—it serves as a fitting tribute to Gaudí’s legacy and a symbolic link between the past and present of the structure.
A new chapter in architectural history
The completion of the Tower of Jesus Christ signals that the Sagrada Família is entering its final phase. Each of the remaining four planned towers will gradually rise above the Barcelona skyline as a symbol of the enduring legacy of one of the most visible architectural projects in human history. The Sagrada Família thus becomes a testament to how long-term perseverance and dedication can turn seemingly impossible dreams into tangible realities that will serve generations to come.
