Microsoft Win10/Win11 Optimization Tool PowerToys 0.98 is expected to introduce a "Lightning Speed Mode" for the command palette.
IT Home, February 25 — According to the latest pull request on the GitHub page, the upcoming PowerToys 0.98 version (current latest is 0.97.1) is expected to introduce a brand-new “Lightning-fast Mode” for the Command Palette.
Note from IT Home: PowerToys is a set of system utilities launched by Microsoft for advanced users to fine-tune and simplify the Windows experience. The Command Palette is a quick launcher tool within PowerToys that allows users to summon a search box via a shortcut key to quickly find applications, files, or execute commands.
According to the pull request, “Lightning-fast Mode” mainly reduces system overhead to further improve performance and visual clarity. This mode disables unnecessary transition animations and fixes several underlying parameters. The system also optimizes the presentation logic of search results to ensure users can select and trigger the first clickable item immediately.
While the current standard version of Command Palette offers decent speed, users can still notice slight delays, icon flickering, and screen jitter during operation. The new mode aims to eliminate these lag issues, making its overall performance comparable to Raycast, a similar tool renowned for its smoothness.
In addition to enhancing the performance of existing features, Microsoft is actively developing a new “Command Palette Dock.” This is a floating module that resides at the top of the display, similar to a taskbar, mainly used to store frequently used components and display various useful information in real-time.
