TotalEnergies Signs Alaska LNG Purchase Agreement
Total Energy Signs Preliminary Agreement to Purchase 2 Million Tons of LNG Annually from Alaska Project
Recently, Total Energy announced that it has signed a preliminary agreement with the Alaska Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in the United States, committing to purchase 2 million tons of LNG annually over the next 20 years. This move will further strengthen Total Energy’s position as the largest LNG exporter in the U.S. and deepen its presence in the Asian market.
The Alaska LNG project is located along the U.S. Pacific coast with an planned annual export capacity of 20 million tons. It is currently the only LNG export terminal in the region authorized by the federal government. Its geographic location facing the Pacific allows direct access to Asia, the world’s largest LNG consumer market, offering a shorter and more flexible logistics route compared to transporting goods through the Panama Canal from the Gulf of Mexico.
By 2025, Total Energy aims to be the largest LNG exporter in the U.S., with an annual export volume of 19 million tons, accounting for about 18% of the total U.S. exports, most of which are directed to Europe to fill the gap left by Russian pipeline gas. The signing of this Alaska agreement will help rebalance its Asian operations.
The final investment decision for the Alaska LNG project has not yet been made, but the signing of this long-term contract indicates that the project’s commercial momentum is building. If approved, it will represent a significant expansion of LNG export capacity along the U.S. Pacific coast.
