On March 3rd, during MWC26 Barcelona, Huawei ICT BG CEO Yang Chao-bin stated in his speech that the global daily token consumption is rapidly increasing, having grown nearly 300 times over the past two years, fueling AI applications such as video generation and smart shopping; more than 30 million AI agents are now working collaboratively across industries worldwide. This brings new opportunities to the mobile industry and also raises new requirements for network capabilities: to support AI multimodal end-to-cloud data interactions, networks need to shift from primarily supporting downstream traffic to ultra-broadband uplink and downlink; to enable real-time AI collaboration and intelligent decision-making, networks must provide secure, reliable, and ultra-low latency experiences.

Yang Chao-bin pointed out that the standardization work for 6G has officially begun, with the first 3GPP standard version for 6G expected to be frozen no earlier than March 2029. The next five years will be a critical window for the explosive growth of mobile AI services, and 5G-A has become an inevitable choice.

Currently, 5G-A has been commercially deployed at scale in over 300 cities worldwide, but its continued capability enhancement depends on the introduction of new spectrum and the re-farming of existing spectrum. After multiple discussions at the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC), the U6GHz band has been established as one of the mainstream frequency bands for future mobile communications.

The so-called “U6GHz” refers to the upper half of the 6GHz frequency band. Commercially, U6GHz is a reliable path for operators to continue investing in 5G-A and anticipate 6G evolution, as well as a key to protecting existing investments and ensuring smooth transition to 6G.

Yang Chao-bin stated that currently, 5G-A supports U6GHz, and mainstream terminal chips and industry chains are already mature, paving the way for large-scale commercial deployment.
