(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte is halfway to being impeached -again- as the Committee on Justice of the House of Representatives (HOR) found two of the complaints against her“sufficient in form" on Monday, March 2.

The committee decided the complaints accusing Duterte of graft and corrupt practices, such as amassing unexplained wealth and failing to disclose all her properties and interests in properties in her statement of assets and net worth (SALN) is worthy of further investigation.

In unanimous votes, the panel in a day-long deliberation said the third and fourth complaints are acceptable, paving the way for their determination of substance tomorrow, March 3.

There were four complaints filed against Duterte, but the first by activist groups was“set aside” for allegedly violating the one-year ban on filing of grievances against impeachable officials.

Legislators who endorsed the first complaint expressed“deep dismay” at the decision, however, accusing the HOR of surrendering its Constitutional authority to the Supreme Court that ruled against similar complaints against the vice president last year on“mere technicalities.”

“[W]e call on the House of Representatives to assert its constitutional authority and independence. The House has the power to craft its own rules on impeachment. It must not retreat,” the Makabayan coalition of progressive lawmakers said.

Another group of anti-Duterte lawmakers withdrew its endorsement of another complaint, throwing their support behind the third complaint in the interest of expediting the proceedings.

Duterte has yet to issue a statement on the development. The vice president recently declared her candidacy for the presidency in the Philippines next national elections in 2028.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s running mate in the last presidential derby in 2022, Duterte has become the president’s most bitter political rival.

Regarded as the leading presidential timber for 2028, Duterte, however, will be banned from running for any elective position if convicted by the Philippine Senate that will be transformed into an impeachment court if the complaints are deemed sufficient in substance on Tuesday.
