Oil majors are in a full-blown bidding war over Namibia's game-changing Mopane field. Chevron and TotalEnergies are now the top contenders to grab a 40% operating stake from Galp Energia, with the winner expected to be announced by year-end.
Here's why everyone's losing their minds: Mopane holds ~10 billion barrels of recoverable oil—making it one of the biggest finds in years. The kicker? Namibia currently produces zero commercial oil, but with this project and TotalEnergies' nearby Venus field (150k bbl/day), the country could become a top-15 oil producer within a decade.
The competition was insane. ExxonMobil, Shell, and Petrobras all threw their hats in initially, but got knocked out. TotalEnergies has the advantage of operating Venus nearby (operational synergies + faster development), but Chevron needs a win badly after mixed drilling results earlier this year.
For Namibia, this deal will literally shape how fast the nation becomes an oil powerhouse. Whichever company wins locks in a primo position in one of the world's hottest new oil provinces.
