According to Cointelegraph: Telegram, the popular messaging application founded by Pavel Durov, reportedly held $400 million in digital assets by the end of 2023, according to the company's financial declaration. This statement came after Durov's latest arrest on August 24, facing multiple charges including terrorism, smuggling, conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering.
Despite having significant crypto assets, Telegram reported a business loss of $108 million for the year ending December 31, 2023 and earned $342.5 million in revenue. Notably, approximately 40% of Telegram's revenue during this period was derived from activities related to digital assets categorized under "integrated wallet" and "collectible sales".
"Integrated wallet" is defined as a software program that allows users to store, send, receive, and trade their crypto assets, while "sale of collectibles" involves facilitating transactions between usernames, virtual phone numbers, and users. Telegram charges fees for these services, contributing to its overall revenue.
Telegram's user base also grew, and the app now has over five million premium users, a number that was around four million by the end of 2023. The platform generated $11.66 million in in-app revenue in the first two months of 2024, bringing its total to $4 billion since its launch.
In 2023, India became the world leader in Telegram downloads with 83.85 million users, while the USA ranked third with 29.92 million downloads.
The arrest of Durov has led to a significant market reaction, especially affecting Toncoin (TON), the local currency of The Open Network (TON) developed by Telegram. Toncoin has seen an increase in trading activity with future investors betting on the price of the asset.
The price of Toncoin has dropped by more than 21% in the last seven days and is currently trading at around $5.30, down from $6.70 as of writing. Its market value also dropped by approximately 2% to $13.42 billion.
