Just realized a lot of people are confused about updating their SASSA details, so let me break this down because it's actually pretty important to get right.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you basically can't do this online—you have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. They'll have you fill out a Payment Method Change Form, and you need to bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account (a recent bank statement works). The bank account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts. Once you submit it, they send it to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: if you want the change to take effect next month, you need to submit before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's actually way easier. You can change your SASSA payment method entirely online through their SRD portal. Just enter your ID number, they'll send you a secure SMS link, click it, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Takes a few days to a couple weeks to verify though.
For your phone number, permanent grant holders should call the SASSA helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit an office. SRD users can update it on the portal too—you'll get an OTP sent to confirm. Just make sure you're using the official SASSA website, not some random link, because there are definitely fake sites out there trying to catch people off guard.
Basically, permanent grants = in-person visits, SRD grants = mostly online. Either way, get it sorted before month-end so your payments don't get messed up.
