Okay so if you're getting SASSA grants, you probably know how annoying it is when something changes and you need to update your details. I've been through this and it's actually different depending on which grant you're on, so let me break it down.

If you're on the SRD grant, honestly it's way easier. You can do the whole thing online - just go to the SASSA SRD portal and find where it says you can change your banking details. You put in your ID number (all 13 digits), they send you a link via SMS to whatever number you have registered, and then you follow the prompts to update your bank account. The key thing is your account has to be in YOUR name, not someone else's. They won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify it all.

When you need to srd change bank account details, make sure the account matches your ID exactly. Also if you're using the cash send option, your phone number has to be RICA-registered. And heads up - there are fake websites out there claiming to help you change this stuff. Don't fall for it. Only use the official SASSA link.

Changing your phone number on SRD is actually pretty straightforward too. Go to their contact details page, enter your ID and Application ID (or you can look it up using your old number if you don't have it), put in your new number, pick a reason for the change, and they'll send you an OTP to verify. Done.

Now if you're on a permanent grant - old age, disability, child grant - it's way more complicated. You literally cannot do most of this online. You have to go in person to a SASSA office. They'll give you a form called the Payment Method Change Form or Consent Form for Bank Payment. You need to bring your original ID and a copy, plus proof of your new bank account - has to be a bank statement from the last three months or an official letter from the bank saying the account is active and in your name.

They process it there and send it to the bank, which can take up to 21 working days. Important thing: if you want it to work for next month's payment, you need to submit before the 15th of the current month. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.

If you just need to update your phone number on a permanent grant, you can try calling the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 to ask about it, but honestly they might still tell you to come in person depending on what you need. The phone line can help but it's not guaranteed to sort everything.

Real talk: the in-person route for permanent grants is frustrating but it's the only way. Bring all your documents, go early, and be prepared to wait. But it does work.
