Just found out some of these old five dollar bills are actually worth serious money. Like, we're talking thousands of dollars for the right rare five dollar bills in good condition.

So it turns out the $5 bill with Lincoln that most people know started in 1914, but the history goes way back further. There were $5 demand notes issued starting in 1861 that are now incredibly valuable. One from 1861 actually sold for over $38,000 because it was in such good condition and genuinely scarce. The front had this freedom statue image and Alexander Hamilton's portrait on it.

What's wild is that even bills from the 1800s like the 1869 Legal Tender notes with Andrew Jackson can pull in $400 to $1,400 depending on whether they've been circulated or not. People used to call those 'Rainbow Notes' for some reason. Then you've got the 1914 bills that were nicknamed 'horseblankets' because they were huge compared to modern currency.

The real money seems to be in those 1934 silver certificates and Federal Reserve notes, especially the special 'star' notes (replacement bills for misprinted ones). A 1934 Hawaii $5 bill with a brown seal can go for up to $6,000. There's also a North Africa version with a yellow seal worth around $1,850. Even the standard blue seal ones from that series hit $425 or more.

Basically, if you've got any old rare five dollar bills lying around, especially from the 1800s or early 1900s, it's worth getting them appraised. The value depends on how rare they are and whether they're in mint condition. Some of these collectible bills are seriously undervalued in circulation.
