Whenever someone talks about cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin quickly comes up in the conversation. But you know what's interesting? Despite being the biggest player, it's far from the only option out there. There are literally thousands of projects beyond Bitcoin — the famous altcoins. And here’s the thing: some altcoins in 2024 have really started to attract attention.

Looking at the market distribution, Bitcoin and Ethereum basically dominate 55% of the total. But with a closer look, we find at least 10 projects with more than $10 billion in market cap, over 70 cryptocurrencies above $1 billion, and hundreds of options above $100 million. That’s a lot of space to explore, and people have been asking: can any of these altcoins outperform Bitcoin in performance by the end of the year?

I’ll show you six that are really worth paying attention to in this race. Important: the data I’ll use is from 2024, a period when Bitcoin appreciated by nearly 50%. But the interesting part is analyzing the real potential these altcoins have to surpass that. Come with me!

Starting with Dogecoin. Yes, that meme everyone knows. Many think it’s just a joke, but the reality is quite different. This altcoin has a market cap above $14 billion and grew over 60% in 2024. The most curious? According to a report from Santiment, Dogecoin is the most present cryptocurrency in digital wallets after Bitcoin and Ethereum. It’s the most expensive meme out there, and people are really holding on.

Next, we have Stacks. This project operates on the Bitcoin network but was created to optimize transactions. It appreciated nearly 70% in 2024. The key difference is that it allows smart contracts and DApps running on Bitcoin, kind of taking the best of both worlds — Bitcoin’s reliability with Ethereum’s versatility. When you understand that, it’s clear there’s still a lot of potential.

BNB is another interesting case. It’s the native altcoin of Binance, and in 2024 it almost doubled in value. The point here is pretty simple: when you buy BNB, you’re tracking the growth of one of the biggest exchanges on the planet. It’s like having a global, unrestricted stock, unlike a traditional stock that’s tied to the local market.

Solana also deserves mention. It started in 2017 but entered the market as an altcoin in 2020. Its advantage is incredible: it can handle up to 65,000 transactions per second through the Proof of History mechanism. In 2024, it grew 43%, and even though it’s a bit less than Bitcoin, we hardly notice because the market is so volatile. Its market value already exceeds $47 billion, placing Solana among the largest.

Litecoin is one of the oldest altcoins, since 2011. It also originated from Bitcoin’s codebase, focusing on transaction optimization. In 2024, it grew less than 10%, quite modest compared to the others. But here’s the point: projects connected to Bitcoin tend to benefit from events like halving. It might catch a ride on this rally.

And finally, Ethereum. The eternal second place, but no problem with that. Ethereum is the foundation for almost the entire DeFi ecosystem, and countless projects run on it. In 2024, it grew over 30%, less than Bitcoin in percentage, but it’s the second-largest cryptocurrency out there. Its potential lies precisely in this fundamental role it plays in the market.

So, these are the altcoins that really caught attention in 2024. The question is: which one do you think has the most potential to surpass Bitcoin moving forward? People continue analyzing, and the race remains interesting.
