Most blockchain systems quietly assume that transaction data will remain available when it is needed. That assumption holds until it doesn’t. When data is withheld, censored, or lost, execution guarantees collapse, fraud proofs fail, and verification becomes impossible. This is not a performance issue. It is a security failure.
Walrus Protocol exists because data availability cannot be an assumption in modular blockchain systems. Once execution is separated from data, trust shifts to wherever that data is stored and served. If that layer is centralized or fragile, the entire stack inherits that weakness.
Walrus treats data availability as infrastructure. It focuses on ensuring that transaction data can always be retrieved, reconstructed, and verified, even under adverse conditions. No execution promises matter if users cannot independently access the data required to validate state.
As rollups and modular chains scale, this layer becomes non-negotiable. Walrus is building guarantees where others rely on optimism, securing the foundation that the rest of the stack depends on.
