From Toys to Productivity Tools: The Evolution of Decentralized Applications

Abstract generation in progress

【Blockchain Rhythm】Recently, an Ethereum core developer revisited the original vision from 2014. Back then, the blockchain dream was simple yet grand — to build a permissionless decentralized application ecosystem. Finance, social networking, travel, DAO governance, crowdfunding, and even entirely different alternative networks, all could run on the same technological foundation.

Over the years, this core vision has sometimes been overshadowed by various “meta-narratives” and trending topics, making it seem somewhat blurred. But it has never truly disappeared. Instead, the underlying technology supporting this vision is evolving at a visibly rapid pace.

Comparing the two eras makes the difference clear. In 2014, decentralized applications were still experimental, with user experience hundreds of times worse than today. Fast forward to 2026, applications like Fileverse are now sufficiently usable, and daily tasks like writing documents and collaborative sharing are comparable to Web2 platforms.

What does this mean? It means that the next wave of decentralization is already on the way. And you can fully participate in this process.

The dream from 2014 is still alive today, and that's truly impressive... But to be honest, can Fileverse really compete? I still prefer using Google Docs.

The group of idealists in 2014 had incredible imagination. As a result, these ten years have just been about taking hits and listening to stories. Now it's finally time to get serious.

Really, over the past few years, watching the ecosystem change from "Can it be used?" to "It's pretty good," feels completely different... In the past, when I talked to friends about DeFi, they looked confused. Now, platforms like Fileverse can really replace Google Docs. To be a bit exaggerated, it's a bit outrageous.

Wow, from 2014 to 2026, over these ten-plus years, toys have truly evolved into productivity tools. This is the way it should be.

Ten years of sharpening the sword, from theoretical discussions on paper to practical application, now that's progress.
