A 23-year-old youth from Brooklyn impersonated a Coinbase employee and defrauded over 100 users out of $16 million worth of crypto.
.
Ronald Spektor, active under the name lolimfeelingevil, impersonated a Coinbase employee and contacted users through phone calls and emails. He deceived them by claiming that their accounts were being hacked and prompted them to quickly transfer money into his new wallet.
.
Actually, those wallets are controlled by Spektor himself, and as soon as users transferred money, he took it all away. It seems that he scammed up to $1 million from just one person. Some people say that because they were scammed up to $6 million, using the name Coinbase seems to have worked quite well.
.
However, Spektor did not remain quiet about the stolen funds. On a channel called Blockchain enemies on Telegram, he openly shared details of his thefts under the name lolimfeelingevil, and it is also reported that he lost around $6 million of the stolen money on crypto gambling websites.
.
When the police started to pay attention to Spektor like this, he had already traveled around the American states with large buses and had also sent $600,000 worth of crypto in advance to a person in the state of Georgia.
But now, Spektor has been arrested and is facing 31 charges.
