The standardization of privacy smart contracts has taken a step forward.

Confidential Contracts, created through the collaboration of OpenZeppelin and Zama, has been updated to v0.3.0. The key point of this release? A complete overhaul to fhevm/solidity 0.9.1. By applying the latest fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) technology, it’s now considered much easier for developers to implement on-chain privacy logic.

Due to FHE’s ability to perform computations directly on encrypted data, it is well-suited for scenarios that require handling sensitive information on the blockchain. From DeFi to DAO governance, it is expected to see increased adoption in areas where privacy is essential.

FHE is finally making some progress, and the combination of OpenZeppelin and Zama is quite impressive.

It should be noted that FHE was already discussed and proven in academia as early as 2015, and it is only now being engineered and implemented, so saying it's "one step away" is a bit of an exaggeration. That being said, OpenZeppelin has finally turned theory into usable code this time, and that truly deserves applause—a huge leap compared to those projects that only know how to shout slogans.

FHE technology is good, but isn’t there still a long way to go before it’s optimized enough to actually be used on mainnet? Actual projects are still in the simulation stage, and the gas fee issue remains. But if things just get slower in the process of solving privacy issues, is there really any point—even if they say it’s been solved? I think we’ll have to see the benchmark results after this update to judge. These days, a lot of “dramatic improvement” news turns out to be minimal in reality. There are already similar solutions emerging elsewhere, so I wonder if this will actually become standardized.

FHE sounds impressive, but there still aren't many projects actually using it, right?

They say privacy smart contracts have taken a leap forward... Has the difficulty that real developers feel actually gone down significantly? I'm curious.

FHE is finally becoming usable. Those previous privacy solutions were too complicated... This move by Zama is really impressive.

I've been hearing about FHE for a long time, and finally, something practical has come out. Developers can finally breathe a sigh of relief.
