Federal judge in the United States announces Trump defamation lawsuit against BBC to go to court in February next year
A judge in the Southern District of Florida has rejected a request by the BBC to delay pre-trial proceedings in the defamation case filed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, and announced that the case is scheduled for trial in February 2027. Last month, the BBC requested to postpone the evidence disclosure process, which may require the BBC to submit大量 emails and other materials related to its coverage of Trump. The federal judge in Florida considered the request “premature.”
In November of last year, The Daily Telegraph’s online edition exclusively revealed part of an internal BBC memo. The memo showed that the BBC Panorama documentary “Trump: The Second Chance?” aired in 2024, which edited together two clips of Trump’s speech to make it appear as if Trump was inciting supporters to participate in the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot.
The edited speech sparked widespread controversy. Trump’s legal team immediately demanded that the BBC withdraw the documentary and issue an apology, or they would file a lawsuit seeking at least $1 billion in damages. The BBC apologized to Trump for the misleading editing but refused to pay compensation. Subsequently, Trump sued the BBC, seeking a total of $10 billion in damages. The BBC has been seeking to dismiss the case. (Xinhua)
