Vitalik Buterin issued a declaration calling for a return to the dreams of Ethereum in 2014—a decentralized internet without corporations, where users own their data, chats, files, and documents, free from surveillance, censorship, or subscriptions.
Things that once seemed slow and impractical are now achievable. By 2026, Ethereum will be faster and cheaper, decentralized chat will run through Waku, and files will be stored via IPFS.
Vitalik mentioned he personally uses Fileverse, a decentralized alternative to Google Docs, where all content is end-to-end encrypted. Even if the service disappears, documents remain on the network and can still be edited using open-source tools.
